The 2014 Women’s World Championships take place from the 1st-6th of December in Niagara on the lake, Canada. Ireland are seeded 8th of 20 countries. There are 7 European countries playing – Ireland, France, Germany Austria, Spain, Wales & England.
The Irish team travelled out to Canada on Saturday 29th of November with their coach Paul Bell and manager Rosie Barry. The team is Aisling Blake, Breanne Flynn, Laura Mylotte and Madeline Perry. Ciara Moloney is the non travelling reserve.
Ireland are drawn in a group with No. 1 seeds Egypt, New Zealand, Columbia and China. I am not 100% sure but I think this is Ireland’s first women’s squash international vs. China, which is a milestone with the worlds most populated country. Obviously the big match is vs. New Zealand which is on the show court on Wednesday 3rd of December.

Day 6 -Saturday 6th November
The team did us proud and finished in 8th place as per their seeding. Playing through the injury of Laura Mylotte and Madeline Perry, they did really well.
Super all through the week especially vs New Zealand to get to the play offs. A great game vs England, the eventual champions in the quarters and then injury hit them. So 8th place in the World, Well Done the Team!!

Day 5 -Friday 5th November
A match to decide 5th place vs. the USA. The Irish squad are indebted to various personnel at White Oaks Resort & Spa, Ontario for getting our team into shape for the match v USA in playoff for 5th place in the Women’s World Team Championships. Dr. Chris Henson (chiropractor/physiotherapist) reviewed our number 1 player, Madeline Perry, first thing this morning to ensure that she was fit for battle on court at 11am. Laura Mylotte also benefited from a rest day and was ready to return to action playing at number 3 today.
There’s something special about the glass court arena: loud music, spectators milling around, official photographers, TV monitors displaying images to be broadcast on sportscanada.tv as the Irish coach, Paul Bell calmly puts the team through their paces in warming up for the match vs USA.
Todays order of play was 1,2,3 so Madeline started v Amanda Sobhy, losing the first set 11/1. Our no 1 player sensibly paced herself against her opponent allowing a gradual increase in mobility, losing 11/3 in the second set. The US no 1 player maintained the pressure in the third set ensuring that Madeline never got an opportunity to challenge her properly: USA win 3/0.
Next, Aisling Blake played Olivia Blatchford at no 2 losing the first set 11-3, and a closely contested second set 11-9. Great volleying & retrieving by Aisling in the third set gave her a set point at 10-8 only for her opponent to fight back and get ahead to 11-10 with a lucky nick shot and then clinch the match with a referee decision to award a stroke against our no 2 player. Aisling was frustrated that she had found the right combination of shots to challenge her opponent a little too late.
Laura Mylotte played Sabrina Sobhy in the final (dead) rubber and was pleased with her performance despite losing 11-4, 11-6.
The Irish team will face Australia in play off for 7th position on Saturday @4pm (Irish time).
Meanwhile, Malaysia upset the no 1 seeds, Egypt, in a thrilling semifinal of breathtaking squash. The final between Malaysia & England (who beat Hong Kong, China in the other semifinal) takes place at 2.30pm on Saturday (local time).
The Irish match tomorrow will not be streamed live but that anyone interested may text Rosie Barry to be added to live Whatsapp feed for updates (text to 086 8256452 before 3pm GMT)

Day 4 -Thursday 4th November
QUARTER FINAL
2nd game Madeline played much better and at a faster pace but at 6 all, got a couple of referee decisions which went against her and she went 2-0 down. In the 3rd game, Madeline again came out fast and took an early lead. Again it went to 6 all. Unfortunately she then got an injury, played out but was unable to compete properly and went down 11-8 to lose 3-0.
