Ireland had 5 players competing in the Under 19 Individual Championships – Sean Conroy, Michael Craig, Cillian Dunne, Oisin Logan and David Ryan. All the players competed extremely well during the tournament.
Sean Conroy beat Amadeo Costa, Switzerland in Rd 1 easily, in 3 sets but lost to Michael Svec, Czech in Rd 2 and went on to finish a highly credible 18th overall.
Michael Craig beat a Welsh player in Rd 1 and lost in Rd 2 to Gadola, Swi who went on to get to the semis losing to Fallows the No. 1 seed. Craig finally finished 25th winning 3 games on the way. Cillian Dunne had a tough first round losing to Davies, Wales but went on to finish 45th, winning 2 games on the way.
Oisin Logan had a great tournament finishing 16th overall. he beat Gross, Denmark in Rd 1, in a very tight match which went to 5 sets, having lost the first 2. He got past an Israeli opponent in Rd 2 but lost to Solnicky, Czech in Rd 3.
David Ryan won his first 2 matches easily against a German & Czech opponent but lost to the No. 1 seed, Richie Fallows in a very close match which went to 4 sets, all of them very close. David then went unbeaten in the 9th – 16 play offs winning 3 matches against Hungarian, Swiss and French players to gain 9th place, which keeping in mind David is actually Under 17, is a magnificent achievement for this talented player from Sutton LTC.
The final was played between Richie Fallows and Oliver Holland, both of England with Holland prevailing in the end.
This was a superb championships by our 5 Irish players with them all doing themselves, their clubs and their country very proud indeed. Oisin, Sean and Michael now go on to play in the U19 team championships with the finals on next Sunday 31st March.
