The Irish Squash working group is finalising the COVID-19 Return to Play Guidance document following the Government’s  announcement that all sporting activities may recommence on June 29th. This is information for clubs in the Republic of Ireland. We await guidance from the NI Executive, for clubs in Northern Ireland.

We have liaised with the Sport Ireland Expert Group regarding our protocol.
Squash clubs may reopen on June 29th with restrictions in place, including but not limited to:

We ask all clubs, players and coaches to read our guidelines carefully before returning to play. We all need to take personal responsibility in observing appropriate measures to minimise any potential Covid-19 risks in our sport.

Our guidance document will be available online within the next 48 hours.

Women in Coaching Survey

Sport Ireland are undertaking a study to gather the most up to date information from female coaches in Ireland, both current and former, to inform the development of future plans, programmes and initiatives for female coaches in the country.

The findings from this survey and the subsequent study will enable Sport Ireland to develop resources, programmes and strategies that can support the ongoing work of Irish Squash and National Governing Bodies (NGBs) and Local Sports Partnerships (LSPs), as well as advising on future work plans in the topic of females in coaching.

We hope that as a result of this survey we can

  • Develop an in-depth understanding of the status of females in coaching roles in Ireland
  • Investigate the challenges and opportunities to increase the numbers of female coaching across all sports and at all levels
  • Use the feedback to develop good practice programmes, resources or strategies for NGBs and LSPs that will lead to successful recruitment, retention, development and progression of female coaches

If you are female and either a former or current coach we would appreciate if you took 10 minutes to fill out this survey.

Irish Squash have established a working group to be led by Rosie Barry regarding the return to play guidelines for squash. A draft protocol has been prepared with reference to current government, HSE, HPSC and NSAI guidelines. Further work is required on our protocol and we will publish it following consultation with Sport Ireland.

In brief, we envisage that a return to ‘solo’ squash (one player only per court) is feasible in Phase 3 of the Irish Government’s ‘Roadmap to re-opening business & society’ (published May 1st). Updates from the UK Government with respect to easing of restrictions in Northern Ireland will guide re-opening of squash clubs there.

Irish Squash do NOT recommend any re-opening of squash courts before Phase 3 of the Roadmap has been reached.

Clubs are also advised to check out the newly-published “Return to Work Safely Protocol: COVID-19 Specific National Protocol for Employers and Workers”, where relevant, for guidance on managing the club environment.

Please check our website regularly for updates.

WSF Statement: COVID-19

The World Squash Federation Board recently met via video conference and took essential decisions concerning the impact of the current COVID-19 pandemic on the 2020 WSF sporting calendar.

After approval of the request of Squash Australia to cancel the 2020 World Juniors Championship scheduled in July 2020, the WSF Board will continue to monitor the worldwide evolution of the COVID-19 pandemic and evaluate the options for organising our annual Juniors event in 2020 at a later date.

The Board outlined that the health and the welfare of the WSF athletes remain the first priority, hence the relevant Commissions will be consulted to determine the best-case scenarios in accordance with our regulations. In addition, the support of the National Federation Members might be required to find a new date ensuring the registration of our best juniors to one of our pinnacle events of the year.

The WSF Board has also decided to postpone the WSF 2020 Masters in Poland and has expressed its grateful thanks to the Polish National Federation and Hasta La Vista Club for their understanding and proposal to organise the 2020 Masters in 2021.

Further information with regards to age eligibility will be communicated after consultation by the Commissions concerned.
