Following the government announement of the introduction of a full Level 5 lockdown, all squash clubs must close from from tonight – December 31st. This is disappointing news, but due to the escalating number of infections and in particular hospital admissions, this action is understandable and necessary for the whole health of the nation.

Level 5 Restrictions

GOOD NEWS!

Sport Ireland announced an additional allocation of funds for the sports sector under the COVID-19 Supplementary Grant Scheme this week. Irish Squash are delighted that our application to Sport Ireland in respect of this scheme was successful. Therefore, we can confirm that no affiliation fees will be charged for the current season and we will refund in full  all affiliation fees paid by our clubs (in the Republic of Ireland) last season. We hope that this will be welcome news for our affiliated clubs as we come to the end of an exceptionally difficult year.

We will also be able to provide much-needed support to our provincial associations in 2021. A sub-committee will be established under the leadership of our Honorary Treasurer to assess additional needs of clubs who are facing financial hardship due to COVID-19 pandemic – more information on this will be provided to the Provinces & clubs in January 2021.

Clubs affiliated to Irish Squash in Northern Ireland may apply to Sport NI for welcome and appropriate financial support under the current SNI scheme for support.
NEW LEVEL 5 RESTRICTIONS FROM DECEMBER 24th 2020

Irish Squash wish to advise that the current limited access to squash permitted in Level 3 should remain in place for the new Level 5 restrictions in the Republic of Ireland –
Solo play on court
2 members of the same household may play/train together on court
One-to-one coaching is allowed

We have aligned our recommendations with the announcement that gyms, leisure centres and swimming pools may remain open for individual training in Level 5 (ie. no change from current Level 3 restrictions).
We will provide an update from Sport Ireland should any variation in this advice be requested.

Please continue to observe the necessary COVID restrictions to ensure squash may remain accessible and safe for all in our sporting community.

RAFFLE PLAYER LIST

Irish Squash submitted an appeal to Sport Ireland following publication of the restrictions permissible in Level 3.
We repeated our request to allow 2 players train on court using socially distanced routines in Level 3.
In our opinion, solo squash is the appropriate restriction to be applied in Level 4 only.
Our submission was considered by the Sport Ireland Expert Group this morning.
They have agreed to allow 2 members of the same household to train/play together during Level 3 restrictions.

Irish Squash will make a submission to Minister Chambers regarding the Framework for Sport in 2021. A webinar will be hosted on Monday 7th December to discuss this issue and we will be in attendance.
Irish Squash continue to actively engage on a frequent basis with Sport Ireland and the Federation of Irish Sport in order to ensure that the voice and concerns of our sport are heard. We welcome the initiatives to work with NGBs for other indoor sports to ensure that the particular needs of this sector are addressed.

We welcome the additional financial support from Sport Ireland at this time. We will announce plans for supporting coaches and players at all levels within the next few days, now that our clubs can reopen safely.

Please continue to observe the relevant protective measures in place in your squash club.

Further news and updates to follow on our website this week.

Following the goverment announcement on November 27th, regarding easing of some restrictions, Irish Squash is urgently seeking clarification on the exact definition of ‘individual training’ from a squash perspective, from Sport Ireland.

Irish Squash cannot provide appropriate guidance on the newly-published Level 3, until Sport Ireland respond to our queries however there should be no squash activity until Irish Squash get permission from Sport Ireland for clubs to open.
