Ireland had two players competing in Finland last weekend, Aurora McDonnell securing a first-place Junior Open finish in the GU13 and Myles Fitzpatrick finishing fourth in the Masters Open MS60.
There were 85 entries spread across seven junior events, and McDonnell raced through her four matches to the title, defeating three Finnish players and a German 3-0.
She was especially on top of her game in the final, giving her opponent, Stella Monto of Finland, just a single point in an impressive 11-1, 11-0, 11-0 win.
Switching to the Masters, Fitzpatrick, the only Irish player among the 64 entries spread across eight categories, enjoyed a hat-trick of comfortable MS60 Group B wins over a trio of local players to make the semi-finals.
His winning run was halted when beaten by another Finnish opponent, Raimo Yliranta, in straight games.
Fitzpatrick then contested a five-game thriller with Olli Marjomaa, his fifth match against Finnish opposition across the weekend. Having led 2-1, he lost 3-2 after missing out 11-6 in the fifth.
Over in Cairo, Marcelino Cronin placed 43rd in the BU15 at the Egyptian Junior Open. Cronin won four of his seven matches at the tournament, including his five-game round of 128 encounter versus the higher-ranked Khalil Altayeh of Jordan.
Twenty-seven players – including women’s European Masters overall No.2 rank Siobhan Parker – will represent Ireland at the European Masters Individual Squash Championships in Poland.
The Wroclaw tournament, which runs from August 27 to 30, has attracted a massive entry list of 605, including W40+ player Parker, who had a second-place finish at the Latvian Masters in the W35+ section in April.
Eight other Irish players ranked in the top 10 across the 18 Masters categories are also participating.
They are Neil Macarron (No.3 M45+), Nigel Peyton (No.4 M45+), David Ayerst (No.6 M50+), Squash Ireland president Rosie Barry (No.7 W60+), Maureen Duke (No.2 W65+), Kyran Hurley (No.1 M70+), Peter Stephens (No.4 M70+) and Michael Conlon (No.5 M70+).
The European Masters Individual Squash Championships were last held in Hamburg in 2023, attracting 605 entries across 20 categories. Ireland finished with three first places: Macarron in the M45+, Rob Staunton in the M50+ and Hurley in the M70+.
There were also two third-place finishes, Parker in the W40+ and Duke in the W65+.
Ahead of the upcoming 2025 renewal in Poland, a two-day European Masters warm-up event will take place this coming weekend at Fitzwilliam LTC, featuring 16 men’s players.
Entries are now open for the 2025 Irish Masters Open GP which will be held in Dublin in October.
September 28th is the registration deadline across the 18 events – nine men’s and nine women’s – starting at O35 and going all the way up to O75.
Fitzwilliam LTC in Dublin will be the main stage for the October 17th-19th Grand Prix tournament, and hotel bookings should be done before September 1st.
It is a tournament that has proven popular in recent years, with 16 nationalities participating in the last two years.
Perth has been named as the host city for the 2026 World Squash Masters Championships, the flagship event for competitors aged +35.
Last year’s tournament in Amsterdam created a new participation record with over 1,200 players – among them a 27-strong team from Ireland.
Five podium finishes were achieved last August, including first place to Mary Sceney in the W+65. There was a hat-trick of second-place finishes – Arthur Gaskin (M+35), Nicholas Staunton (M+50) and Willie Hosey (M+60), with Neil Macarron taking third in his M+45 category.
The bi-annual world festival will now move from Europe to the southern hemisphere with Australia, the most successful nation in World Squash Masters history by total medal count, set to stage the event it last hosted in 2001.
Next year’s tournament will take place from August 30 to September 6 and will feature an all-glass show court that will be erected in the City of Stirling suburb of Perth. Action will also take place on the 14 courts of Mirrabooka Squash Centre and the eight courts of Bellmont Squash Centre.
Squash Australia CEO Robert Donaghue said: “On behalf of Squash Australia, I would like to thank the Western Australian Government through Tourism WA and the City of Stirling for the incredible backing they have given us.
“With their support, we are confident this will be the biggest squash event ever hosted in Australia and we are looking forward to welcoming the world to Perth.
“Hosting international events in Australia is an important part of our strategy, not only does it provide our players with an opportunity to compete against the best in the world, it is critical in providing experience to our coaches, referees, administrators and volunteers, which they can take back to their local clubs and centres and continue to build on the capability and capacity of their local squash community.
“We also see this event as another great opportunity to expose the sport to the wider community and inspire them to come and try squash and experience all the benefits participating in our great sport can offer.”
